They dragged Ngozi out of the river as if she were the criminal.
Water streamed from her trembling body. Her chest heaved. Moments earlier she had fought the current with everything she had to save a drowning boy. But instead of gratitude, angry voices rose around her—accusing, shouting, pointing fingers. The wealthy family snatched the boy away without even looking at her. Their faces held suspicion, not relief.
Ngozi stood there alone, shaking, confused, suddenly unwanted.
That was the day her life broke.
